Are you thinking of going on the Keto diet? For starters, always research on the diet itself or ask a nutritionist or doctor before indulging in any diet, especially if you have a medical condition.
I decided to try the Keto diet after I gained a lot of weight when my family and I went on vacation. We binged on food and I felt all the calories and pounds add up. I am very proud to say that I have lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks of the Keto diet!
What is the Keto Diet?
Firstly, I researched on what the Keto diet is all about. The Ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that drastically reduces carbohydrate intake and replaces it with fat. This process causes the body to go into Ketosis. Ketosis is a natural metabolic state wherein the body produces ketones out of fat and uses them for energy instead of turning them into carbohydrates. The Ketogenic diet is also recommended for those with epileptic seizures and who are not responsive to medication.
One of the benefits I gained with Keto diet is my migraine/headaches disappeared after a week. Other benefits of the Keto diet are improved heart health, reduces acne, and helps reduce cancer.
On the other hand, you may also be at risk of kidney stone formation, constipation, sluggishness, and low blood sugar among others. Therefore, it is always best to consult with a medical professional before starting the diet.
How I Went Through the Keto Diet
Before starting the Keto diet, I measured my weight. It was 136 lbs, imagine that! I also decided to try 16/8 fasting. 16/8 fasting or intermittent fasting means eating low-calorie food and drinks within an 8-hour window, then fasting for the next 16 hour. You can only drink water during this time. If you will be trying this, make sure to drink plenty of water, or you will risk yourself from dehydration and other health problems. You can repeat this 16/8 fasting cycle once or twice a week. Intermittent fasting is not only good for weight loss but also helps control blood sugar, boost brain function, and contributes to longevity.
I started the day with a breakfast of half an avocado, 2 eggs and uncured bacon. I also came up with the Keto Breakfast Frittata so I don’t get tired of avocado and eggs. For lunch, I have green salad with fish or meat. Dinner is fish or meat cooked in ghee or butter + salad or chia pudding soaked in almond milk with berries.
This doesn’t stop me too from eating out during the weekend with my family and friends. I am glad that there are restaurants where Keto is part of their menu like Starbucks. My favorite drink is Venti Cold Brew Frappe with heavy cream and 5 pumps of Sugar-Free vanilla and Sugar-Free cinnamon dolce syrup. This is sort of weekend treat for me, or on an ordinary day, iced green-tea with stevia sugar. There is this place near our house too called, Mooyah, where they offer Keto, Low-Carb or Paleo burgers served in Lettuce Buns. This is one of the diets out there that are healthy and easy to maintain.
After 2 weeks, my weight has now gone down to 127 lbs! No migraines and minor headaches. I don’t take naps in the afternoon anymore due to severe sleepiness and sluggishness. Although yes, there are times that I feel sluggish because I had to give up most of my cravings, I felt good after a few days. I even found a recipe for Keto Chocolates to uplift my spirits and manage my cravings.
