But before we dive into the Valentine gift ideas, let us take a step back and trace the origins of this season of love:
How Did Valentine’s Day Come About?
The idea of February 15 celebrated a Roman pagans’ fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the god of agriculture, as well as to the founders of Rome- Romulus and Remus called Lupercalia. According to legends, the festivities started with the sacrifice of a goat for fertility and a dog for purification. The hide of the goat was made into strips and dipped into the sacrificial blood, which was later used to gently slap both women and crop fields for fertility. Later during the day, the names of young women will be placed in a large urn. Then, the city’s bachelors will pick names from the urn and become paired for the year. Most matches often ended in marriages.
St. Valentine or Valentinus was a 3rd century Catholic priest who lived in Rome. During this time, the Emperor Claudius II, a pagan ruler, believed that single men can better defend Rome than those who worry about their wives and families and therefore, created strict laws that prevented Roman soldiers from marrying. However, St. Valentine officiated the marriage of the Roman soldiers who converted to Catholicism in secret, thus, starting the reputation for believing in the importance of love.
However, Emperor Claudius eventually found out and had St. Valentine jailed and executed. St. Valentine or Valentinus died on February 14, 270 AD.
While this was happening, St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, was ordered by Claudius II to be beheaded outside of Rome.
Meanwhile, in the 14th century, the poet Geoffrey Chaucer linked the feast of St. Valentine with romantic love and the idea flourished through England and France.
